A downloadable project

I'm turning this concept into a full Celeste mod! Check it out here: https://iwarren.itch.io/a-randomizer-mod

In a chaotic and broken 2D Platformer, use your creativity and game knowledge to exploit the game and overcome impossible odds.

Description
Randomizer is a 2D Platformer Rougelite where you must complete sequences of short rooms under chaotic gameplay effects, and are rewarded for the difficulty of your circumstances. Players can use these rewards to upgrade their character or change the current effects. Levels are fairly simple with one obvious route that is often made to be impossible under the effects, forcing players to be creative in how they plan to reach the end. The player will also have upgradable abilities and easily exploitable movement systems to give the feeling of "breaking the game".

Heavily inspired by video game randomizers, especially Kaze Emanuar's Chaos Mario for SM64 and Maddie 480's Extended Variants Mod for Celeste. Game flow inspired by Into The Gungeon and other roguelites

Core Gameplay Loop:

The core loop consists of the actions the player will take in each individual room, and represents the main moment-to-moment gameplay. It goes as follows:

  1. Enter room under randomized effects
  2. Optionally spend currency to modify/remove effects
  3. Complete the room and receive currency based on the amount and severity of negative effects
  4. Effects are randomly added/removed for the next room
  5. Repeat for each room, occasionally entering a shop and exchanging currency for positive effects

Exploration Loop:

Before each stage begins, the player will have a timed opportunity to explore and become familiar with the map, secrets, and shops. Discovering rooms, secrets, or shops will benefit players during the main gameplay. Collectibles are also scattered across the map, encouraging incurious players to explore. The gameplay during this phase goes as follows:

  1. Freely explore the level, searching for collectibles
  2. Discover possible route, secret or shop
  3. Make mental note of any secrets, or add a pin to the map
  4. Rooms, shops, and some other features are added automatically when discovered
  5. Collect currency to spend during gameplay or clocks to extend exploration time
  6. Repeat until timer runs out

Game Flow Loop:

Surrounding the other two loops is the game flow loop, which consists of the actions the player takes across an entire run of the game. It goes as follows:

  1. Spend initial/leftover currency to enhance your character's stats and unlock new abilities
  2. Unspent currency is converted into lives
  3. Enter a level with a randomized layout
  4. Complete exploration phase, collecting currency and filling out your map
  5. Use your map to assist your routing during gameplay
  6. Complete the level with as much currency left as possible
  7. Repeat until victory or death

Progression Loop:

Between runs, the player can use permanent currency to unlock some permanent upgrades, unlockables, or temporary boosts. The progression loop goes as follows:

  1. Spend upgrade points on new positive effects in the pool, higher difficulty options, and cosmetic unlockables
  2. Select a difficulty for the next run, and optionally spend upgrade points to start with more currency and/or skip levels.
  3. Complete a run by winning or dying, and earn upgrade points based on levels completed, difficulty, and overall performance
  4. Repeat indefinitely
