Reflection
I'm really happy with how this prototype turned out, it's totally representative of the loop I had in mind but with a few flaws related to balancing. I usually really struggle with planning time to work on things and underestimating how long they'll take, so I'm really happy that I was able to plan ahead on this one.
My question was if the game would be interesting and chaotic, and if the three games combined would be more than the sum of their parts in this context. I would say the answers to both are a definitive yes, especially with the cup matching game requiring you to keep a position in your head while playing other games. I was also curious how the powerup system would contribute to the strategy, and while I think my implementation was solid I haven't seen enough playtesting to know how well it really worked. I think there might need to be some tweaks to the balance for it to function exactly as I was imagining.
I actually did change it quite a bit after the original playtest, mainly rebalancing and improving the roguelike game. I added a few new simple enemy types and spent a lot of time improving the way it scales over time. I also made it so enemies stop for a while after they hit you so that there isn't as much of a positive feedback loop when you start taking damage. The game was also too much to process before you understood the 3 sub-games, so I added a guaranteed point before which none of the games would be switched.
If I keep working on this, I think I'll start with some basic polish like in-game controls and bugfixes. I'd also love to add music to each of the games, because I think switching between 3 songs would add a lot to the chaotic feeling of the game. From there I think just having more games that can be switched to and improving the way the timing scales would go a long way.
